Geld verdienen met foto’s die je toch al hebt? Dat klinkt als muziek in de oren! Je foto’s verkopen via Print On Demand (POD) platformen is erg makkelijk. Sinds kort ben ik gestart met het verkopen van mijn foto’s via de Amerikaanse site Society6. Lees hier mijn bevindingen tot nu toe!
Zoals jullie misschien wel weten ben ik zo’n anderhalf jaar geleden gestart met het verkopen van mijn foto’s via de Nederlandse site ‘Werk aan de Muur’. Inmiddels heb ik daar zo’n 35 foto’s verkocht en in totaal bijna 670,- euro mee verdiend. Een leuke manier dus om wat bij te verdienen met de foto’s die anders op je hardeschijf staan te verstoffen. Maar veel verder dan Nederland en wat omringende Europese landen komt deze site niet. Daarom ging ik op zoek naar andere platformen om mijn foto’s online te verkopen in het buitenland. Want een grotere doelgroep = meer kans op verkopen! En wie wil er nou geen passief inkomen genereren.
Ik ga komende tijd verschillende buitenlandse platformen uitproberen. Zo hoop ik na een tijdje een goed beeld te hebben van welke platformen (voor mij) goed werken, welke tips ik mee kan geven en of ik bepaalde trends zie in foto’s die wel of niet goed verkopen. Laat me vooral weten op welke platformen jij te vinden bent en wat je ervaringen zijn!
Foto’s verkopen via Print On Demand
Net als ‘Werk aan de Muur’ is ook Society6 een zogenaamde Print On Demand site. Dit wil zeggen dat er pas een print gemaakt wordt als er een order is. Dit is anders dan bijvoorbeeld shops zoals Etsy of het hebben van een eigen webshop, waarbij je meestal op voorhand prints laat afdrukken en die gaat verkopen. Via de meeste Print On Demand platformen kun je niet alleen foto’s verkopen, maar ook tientallen andere artikelen waarop jouw beelden afgedrukt kunnen worden! Van kleding tot telefoonhoesjes en van mokken en kussens tot tassen, stickers en meubels.
Het aanmaken van een shop op een Print On Demand platform is meestal gratis. Daarnaast zorgt zo’n webshop zoals Society6 voor alle communicatie en afhandeling van verkopen. Ze maken het product, versturen het naar de ontvanger en handelen retouren of klachten af. Jij hoeft dus niets anders te doen dan je foto’s, illustraties, patronen of ander artwork te uploaden in je shop. Klinkt prachtig, toch?
Toch zijn er ook dingen waar je over na moet denken. Want waar je bij een eigen shop 100% van de winst krijgt, is dat hier niet zo. De prijs van je product wordt hier bepaald door 3 dingen: de kosten voor het produceren van het product, de marge voor het POD-platform én jouw eigen marge. Je staat dus een deel van je winst af aan de site waar jij je producten verkoopt. In ruil voor het gebruik van hun platform, de promotie die ze maken en alles wat ze voor je uit handen nemen. Persoonlijk vind ik dit geen probleem, maar dat moet ieder voor zich bepalen.
Nog een puntje waar je rekening mee moet houden is dat iedere website andere regels en algemene voorwaarden heeft. Ben jij heel voorzichtig met de rechten van je beeldmateriaal, dan moet je die wel grondig checken. Je gaat namelijk je foto’s in hoge resolutie uploaden naar het platform, dus door vooraf goed te checken wat je ‘weggeeft’ voorkom je problemen achteraf.
Hoe werkt Society6?
Tijdens mijn onderzoek naar Amerikaanse POD-platformen kwamen drie verschillende sites vaak naar boven: Society6, Redbubble en Fine Art America. Ik wil dus starten met foto’s verkopen via deze drie platformen. Waarbij Society6 mijn eerste test is. Je kunt hier mijn profiel bekijken zodat je een goed beeld krijgt van de website en de mogelijkheden voor het verkopen van jouw foto’s, illustraties of andere kunst!
Het maken van een account bij Society6 is binnen een paar minuten gedaan. En ook het uploaden van je foto’s gaat vrij simpel. Binnen een uurtje heb jij dus een shop met wat foto’s opgezet! Toch zijn er een paar punten waar je op moet letten:
- Titel, Tags en Beschrijving: een platform zoals Society6 bestaat uit enorm veel creatievelingen vanuit de hele wereld die hun werk uploaden in de hoop op verkopen. Met alleen het uploaden van je foto’s kom je er dus niet, je moet ook nog gevonden worden! Dit doe je binnen het platform zelf met de drie mogelijkheden die je daarvoor hebt: de titel, de beschrijving en de tags. Omschrijf je foto’s zo goed mogelijk met woorden waarop jij denkt dat mensen zoeken. Maar ook gerelateerde woorden die er goed bij passen! Heb je een foto gemaakt in Mallorca? Voeg dan bijvoorbeeld ook ‘Spain’ en ‘Europe’ toe. Vergeet niet dat alle termen in het Engels moeten. Ook termen qua kleur of sfeer zijn slim om toe te voegen.
- Formaten & Uitkadering: Je kunt er voor kiezen om alleen fotoprints te verkopen via Society6. Maar als jouw foto ook tof is op andere producten, waarom bied je die dan niet aan? Meer kans op verkopen, toch? Als je dit doet, moet je er wel voor zorgen dat jouw foto’s qua afmetingen groot genoeg is (met goede kwaliteit uiteraard) om dit te doen. Ieder product vraagt om andere afmetingen, maar ook een andere uitsnede. Via de edit knop op de site kun je ieder artwork per product handmatig uitkaderen. Ik raad je zeker aan om dit te doen. Het is zonde als je niet het beste uit je beelden haalt.
- Trends: Een goede manier om je kans op verkopen te vergroten is om in te spelen op trends. De kans dat mensen in het voorjaar foto’s van strand, palmbomen en zee kopen is groter dan in de herfst/winter. En cosy foto’s kun je juist beter plaatsen net voordat die periode eraan komt. Het is eigenlijk hetzelfde als producten in de winkel. Ook trends qua kleuren, stijl, quotes, onderwerp etc. kun je gebruiken om op te vallen bij een groter publiek. Maak je illustraties of schilderijen? Dan kun je zelfs overwegen om de mogelijkheden van fanart van TV shows of films te onderzoeken.
- Aanpassen van je marge: Als je foto’s verkoopt via Society6 dan hanteren ze per product een standaard marge die jij krijgt uitgekeerd. Deze marge is niet hoog, waardoor de prijs van het product relatief laag blijft. Wil jij meer verdienen op je verkopen? Dan kun je dit zelf aanpassen. Persoonlijk zou ik dit pas doen als het een beetje loopt en je account al goed gevonden wordt.
- Maak Collecties: Hoe meer foto’s of ander artwork je gaat uploaden, hoe onoverzichtelijker je shop wordt. Daarom is het slim om ‘Collections’ te maken. Maak bijvoorbeeld collecties voor verschillende landen, verschillende onderwerpen, per kleur of met een bepaalde stijl. Zo vinden bezoekers van je shop makkelijker wat ze willen!
Je hebt trouwens wel een PayPal-account nodig om aan je shop te koppelen. Hierop worden je verdiende euro’s overgemaakt. Je opbrengsten worden eens per maand overgemaakt.
Mijn ervaring tot nu toe!
Inmiddels verkoop ik pas een maandje mijn foto’s via Society6. En omdat het grootste deel van die tijd pas een paar foto’s op mijn shop stonden, had ik ook geen grote verwachtingen van de verkopen. Tot nu toe heb ik 1 foto verkocht en daarmee verdiende ik $1.19. Nog lang geen gouden bergen passief inkomen dus.
Maar ik blijf regelmatig foto’s toevoegen, mijn beschrijvingen en tags updaten, kijken naar trends en kijken of ik mijn shop zelf kan promoten. En zo hoop ik dat na verloop van tijd mijn shop steeds wat meer gevonden wordt en de verkopen elkaar steeds wat sneller opvolgen. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte!

Heb zojuist mijn 1e foto’s geüpload naar Society6. Heb al een Pay Pal dus dat scheelt.
Doe al jaren foto’s richting Shutterstock en Eyem en Werk aan de Muur maar de opbrengst is een
hooguit paar tientjes per jaar.

Dank voor je nieuwsbrief en de leuke tips & artikelen. Ik heb je website net ontdekt en vind het erg leuk om te lezen! Toevallig ben ik twee weken geleden begonnen met Society6 en heb er nu zo’n 20 foto’s op staan. Tot nu toe nog niets verkocht, maar dat komt vast nog wel (zei de optimist). Ik ben nu een beetje rond aan het kijken welke foto’s populair zijn en ook probeer ik mijn foto’s wat meer te bewerken, zodat ze er beter opstaan. Jouw Photoshop tutorials gaan me daar vast bij helpen. Super dank voor al deze info en ik blijf je volgen!
